Thanks for the response - we ran into the case sensitivity problem some time ago and have since been very careful with URLs, so I'm pretty sure it's not that. Also, https is generally OK shortly after reboot and when the server is not in use by others when very little is cached, and I am accessing stuff thru the same route each time.
